8/31: Summer assignment due.
9/6: Essay. Examine Anna Karenina from one critical perspective in a way that spans the entire
novel. Your thesis must cover the critical perspective without specifically mentioning it.
Quote and cite using MLA guidelines.
9/12: Beowulf close readings. Excerpt two short quote from each of the chapters from the
Prelude through Episode IV. For each, provide a paragraph that examines the passage in detail and
in context.
9/16: Beowulf quote exam and essay on historical context.
9/23: Poetry exercises for Chapter 1 due.
9/30: Poetry terminology exam.
Wed., 8/31: Summer assignments due.
Fri., 9/2: HW: 1-page response, evaluation both summer reading texts based upon
rhetorical appeal
Wed., 9/7: Choose one passage from each of your two summer reading texts.
For each, copy and “mark-up” the excerpt.
For each, write a 1-page analysis in which you:
–identify the rhetorical appeal of the passage
–analyze specific use of word choice (diction) that contributes
to the overall appeal
Fri. 9/9: Exam on rhetorical terminology
The following method will be used to determine your grade.
Large Assignments: 60%
This includes essays, papers, and tests.
Tests must be made up within the week.
Only hard copy of work is acceptable.
Late work will be graded and the score will be divived in half (a late 90 = a grade of 45)
The summer assignment counts as TWO of these large assignments.
Small Assignments: 20%
This includes quizzes, reading checks, and homework.
Participation and Attendance: 20%
This grade is given approximately four times a marking period.
Responsible Attendance (regular attendance and appropriate priorities)
On-task behavior (NO other work, electronics, etc. I reserve the right to give a ZERO for this).
